About Me

Hi, I’m Kimberly Birth Worker

My name is Kimberly Gorskie-Garcia , her-she. I’m French born and raised in Lyon, I’m now living in Redondo Beach, LA, CA , in the center of Riviera Village. I’m a birth and postpartum doula trained by Cornerstone.

The question everyone is asking is why and how I became a doula?

Well, we need to go back to my youth. I studied a lot of Art, had my bachelor in literature and art and decided to go studying communication for a degree. But I quit after several months knowing it was not for me. I decided to go working instead and one of my best friend introduced me to the healthcare system and I loved it deeply. I worked for 2 years in a retirement home. For a while I tried to go back to my first love, Art by going to the university but I ended up going back to the care. From this point/Back then I decided to train my self .

I went to the nurse assistant school and became a pediatric nurse assistant. I loved that job , I worked in different like reanimation, ER (Emergency room0, NICU (Newborn intensive care unit), Neurologic pediatric , with burn kids and I worked a lot in the Labor and Delivery floor.

This is where I discovered my love and my path. I was so frustrating being enable to listen , care , be there as much as I wanted to for the person who was giving birth. I wanted more, I wanted to be able to stay hours with that person if she needed me too , be there the whole night if she-he-they were feeling overwhelming and just required support. The time we needed to do our job properly wasn’t giving to us so I searched for an alternative to my job  and I discovered that amazing job : Being a Doula.

Los Angeles my new professional start

Unfortunately at that time, Doula was more a silly word that was making people laugh or making a face like you said something wrong or people will said “ doula? What is that ? did I heard wrong?”. And in France, you were and still (most of the time),  being allowed to have only one support personn. So, I kept that idea in my head , and I found this amazing job in the burn pediatric floor that I loved so much, I stayed there for years , learned so much. I became a mom of 2 : Rita-Rosa and Pavel and decided to stay at home for taking care of them a little bit instead of taking care of the others for once.

Then, we decided to move to LA with my family and I knew it was an opportunity for me to become a doula.

I talked to people about Doulas in LA and  that was amazing : people where talking about their own doula, givin me website, recommendations.   I was kind of lost with all the training that were popping in my google research and than…. Cornerstone. I could not dreamed about a better place to be trained. So I am certified by Cornerstone , you can check their amazing website and you will understand a lot about my way of working. I learned so many things , and being a pediatric nurse assistant during 5 years give me  a lot of different  knowledges thanks to all the units I worked at .

I am serving in person the area around Redondo beach but I choose to do also some virtual support. Even if being a Doula was a struggle in France several years ago, I’m glad to see some changes now. People are talking about alternative, supporting people, taking care of each others. We still have a long way to go but I want to be a part of that change where all the birthing people will be able to have Doula if they want to , and give birth the way they want to.
